How to Use a Soda Maker

From unboxing to perfect fizz in 5 minutes

Just got a soda maker? This guide walks you through setup, making your first bottle, and pro tips for the best carbonation. It's easier than you think โ€” most people are making sparkling water within 5 minutes of opening the box.

What's in the Box

Most soda makers come with everything you need to start:

  • The machine โ€” the carbonator itself
  • 1-2 bottles โ€” typically 1L, reusable
  • 1 CO2 cylinder โ€” usually 60L capacity
  • Quick start guide

That's it. No power cord needed for most models (they're manual). No assembly required beyond inserting the CO2 cylinder.

Initial Setup (2 minutes)

Setting up your soda maker is dead simple:

Step 1: Insert the CO2 Cylinder

For Quick-Connect Cylinders (SodaStream Terra, Duo, Art)

  1. Remove the back panel (usually slides off)
  2. Hold the cylinder upright
  3. Push the cylinder up into the slot until you hear a click
  4. Replace the back panel

For Screw-In Cylinders (Aarke, older SodaStream)

  1. Remove the back panel or cylinder cover
  2. Screw the cylinder clockwise into the connector
  3. Tighten until snug (don't over-tighten)
  4. Replace the panel

๐Ÿ’ก Not sure which type you have?

Pink/coral cap = Quick-connect. Blue cap = Screw-in. Check our CO2 cylinder guide for details.

Step 2: That's It

Seriously. Once the CO2 is in, you're ready to carbonate. No power connection, no app, no calibration.

Making Your First Bottle

Here's the process you'll repeat every time:

  1. Fill the bottle with cold water โ€” up to the fill line (usually marked). Don't overfill.
  2. Insert the bottle โ€” tilt it in at an angle, then twist to lock (SodaStream) or push straight up (Aarke lever).
  3. Carbonate โ€” press the button (or pull the lever) in short bursts. You'll hear CO2 hissing into the water.
  4. Listen for the buzz โ€” after 3-5 presses, you'll hear a buzzing/release sound. This means the water is fully carbonated.
  5. Remove the bottle โ€” twist to unlock and tilt out.
  6. Drink! โ€” your sparkling water is ready.

โœ“ First Bottle Tip

For your very first bottle, start with 3 presses and taste. Then add more carbonation if you want more fizz. This helps you learn your preference.

Getting the Right Fizz Level

Different people like different carbonation levels. Here's a rough guide:

Fizz LevelButton PressesLike...
Light2-3Subtle bubbles, slightly still
Medium4-5Perrier, San Pellegrino
Strong6+Topo Chico, aggressive fizz

The "buzz" sound indicates maximum carbonation โ€” the water can't absorb more CO2. Extra presses after the buzz just waste gas.

Pro Tips for Better Carbonation

๐ŸงŠ Use Cold Water

Cold water absorbs CO2 much more efficiently than room temperature. Refrigerate your bottle for 30 minutes before carbonating, or use water from the fridge. You'll get better fizz with less gas.

๐Ÿ’จ Short Bursts, Not Long Holds

Press the carbonation button in short 1-2 second bursts, not long holds. This gives the CO2 time to absorb between presses and wastes less gas.

๐Ÿ“ Don't Overfill

Fill to the line, not above. Overfilling leaves no headspace for CO2, resulting in weaker carbonation and potential overflow.

โฑ Drink Fresh

Homemade sparkling water is best consumed within 24-48 hours. It stays fizzy longer if you keep it cold and sealed.

Adding Flavors

Important: Always carbonate water FIRST, then add flavors. Never put flavored liquids or syrups in the bottle before carbonating โ€” this causes overflow and can damage the machine.

How to add flavor:

  1. Carbonate plain water
  2. Remove the bottle
  3. Add flavor drops, syrup, or fruit
  4. Gently stir or swirl

SodaStream sells their own flavors, but you can use any drink syrup, fresh fruit, or flavor concentrates.

Maintenance & Care

Daily

  • Rinse bottles after use
  • Keep the machine dry

Weekly

  • Wash bottles with dish soap (most are dishwasher-safe)
  • Wipe down the machine exterior

Monthly

  • Check bottle condition โ€” look for cracks, cloudiness
  • Verify CO2 level โ€” if fizz is weak, cylinder may be low

Every 2-3 Years

  • Replace bottles โ€” they have expiration dates due to pressure rating
  • Check seals โ€” replace if leaking
