The Real Differences That Matter
๐งน Vacuuming Performance
Both are excellent vacuums, but they approach cleaning differently:
- Roborock S8 Pro Ultra: 6,000 Pa suction with dual rubber brushes. Exceptional on carpet, picking up 98% of debris in our tests. The rubber brushes don't tangle with hair.
- Dreame L20 Ultra: Higher 7,000 Pa suction but with a single brush roll. Slightly better raw pickup on hard floors, comparable on carpet.
Winner: Tie โ Both excellent. Roborock edges ahead on carpet; Dreame on hard floors.
๐งฝ Mopping Performance
This is where they diverge significantly:
- Roborock S8 Pro Ultra: Dual spinning mop pads with 600g pressure. Cold water wash in dock. Good mopping but mops don't reach edges.
- Dreame L20 Ultra: Dual rotating mops with extending arm that reaches edges and corners. Hot water wash (60ยฐC) kills bacteria and removes stains better. Noticeably cleaner floors.
Winner: Dreame L20 Ultra โ The extending mop arm and hot water washing make a real difference. Floors feel genuinely clean.
๐ค Navigation & Obstacles
Both use LiDAR with camera-based obstacle avoidance, but:
- Roborock: Uses 3D structured light for more reliable obstacle detection. Rarely gets stuck, handles cables and shoes confidently.
- Dreame: AI-based camera detection works well but occasionally misjudges soft obstacles like socks.
Winner: Roborock โ More consistent obstacle handling in our tests.
๐ฑ App & Software
Roborock has been in the game longer and it shows:
- Roborock: Polished app, reliable mapping, easy to set up rooms and no-go zones. Matter/HomeKit support.
- Dreame: Functional app with all the features, but less polished interface. Occasional connectivity hiccups.
Winner: Roborock โ Better software experience overall.

๐ Our Verdict
For most homes, we recommend the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra. It's $100 cheaper, has a better app, more reliable obstacle avoidance, and excellent all-around cleaning. The mopping is good enough for maintenance cleaning.
However, if you have mostly hard floors and want truly clean mopping (not just maintenance), the Dreame L20 Ultra's hot water washing and extending mop arm deliver noticeably better results.
