If your SodaStream is making weak, flat, or barely fizzy water, don't panic. This is usually an easy fix. Here are the 7 most common causes and solutions.
โก Quick Check
The most common cause is an empty or nearly empty CO2 cylinder. If you've had it for a while or used it heavily, try exchanging for a new cylinder first.
1. Your CO2 Cylinder Is Empty or Low
Symptoms: Weak hissing sound, barely any bubbles, no "buzz" sound even after many presses.
The fix: Exchange your cylinder for a full one. A 60L cylinder lasts about 60 liters of water, so if you've made 50+ liters, it's probably running low.
How to check: Remove the cylinder and shake it. A full cylinder feels heavy and you can feel liquid CO2 sloshing. An empty one feels light and hollow.
Where to Get CO2 Refills โ2. The Cylinder Isn't Properly Installed
Symptoms: No gas coming out at all, or hissing from the cylinder area (not the bottle).
The fix:
- Quick-connect (pink cap): Remove and reinstall. Push firmly until you hear a distinct click.
- Screw-in (blue cap): Unscrew and retighten. Make sure it's straight (not cross-threaded). Tighten until snug but don't overtighten.
3. You're Using Warm Water
Symptoms: Fizz disappears quickly after carbonating, weaker-than-expected carbonation.
The fix: Use cold water. Cold water absorbs and holds CO2 much better than room temperature water. Refrigerate your bottle for 30 minutes before carbonating, or fill it with cold water from the fridge.
๐ก Science Note
At 5ยฐC, water can hold about 3ร more dissolved CO2 than at 25ยฐC. Cold water = better fizz, less wasted gas.
4. You're Overfilling the Bottle
Symptoms: Water splashes up during carbonation, weak fizz, possible overflow.
The fix: Fill only to the marked line. The headspace above the water is necessary for CO2 to enter and pressurize the bottle. Overfilling leaves no room for gas.
5. The Bottle Isn't Sealed Properly
Symptoms: Hissing sound around the bottle (not from inside), gas escaping without carbonating.
The fix:
- Make sure the bottle is twisted fully into place and locked
- Check that the bottle's threading isn't damaged or dirty
- Try a different bottle if you have one
6. Your Bottle Is Worn Out
Symptoms: Bottle looks cloudy, scratched, or has a visible expiration date that's passed.
The fix: Replace the bottle. SodaStream bottles have a 2-4 year lifespan and are printed with expiration dates. Worn bottles may not seal properly or hold pressure.

7. The Machine's Valve or Seal Is Damaged
Symptoms: Persistent issues even with new cylinder, new bottles, and cold water. Gas leaking from the machine body.
The fix:
- Check the carbonation valve where the bottle connects โ clean any debris
- Inspect the CO2 seal where the cylinder connects โ replacement seals are available online ($5-10)
- If the machine is old (5+ years) and nothing else works, it may be time to replace it
Quick Troubleshooting Flow
- Is the cylinder empty? โ Shake it. Light = replace.
- Is the cylinder installed correctly? โ Reinstall, listen for click/check tightness.
- Is the water cold? โ Refrigerate 30 min before carbonating.
- Is the bottle overfilled? โ Fill only to the line.
- Is the bottle sealed? โ Reinsert, check for hissing around the seal.
- Is the bottle expired/damaged? โ Replace it.
- Still not working? โ Machine may need repair or replacement.
When to Just Get a New Machine
If you've gone through all the fixes and your SodaStream still isn't carbonating:
- Check your warranty โ SodaStream offers 2-year coverage
- If out of warranty and the machine is 5+ years old, replacement is often cheaper than repair
- A new SodaStream Terra is $89 and comes with fresh warranty
